About Phoebe Standardbreds

Breeding of race horses, predominantly trotters has become a passion. I have always followed the races but it wasn't until 2002 that our first Broodmare was purchased, after seeing her advertised in the Harness Weekly and knowing she traced back to the old breed my father and grand father had "played around" with. Ashley Sunset was her name and although we have now gone on to produce a Group 1 winner and many other winners, the thrill of our first win as a breeder with her first foal was enough to get me hooked, the fact it was at our local Cheviot meeting meant for a great day we will never forget!!

Other in foal purchases followed, but always on a budget and following alot of indepth study.

Today we are breeding from 7 mares with the view to keep the odd filly and sell the others through the sales.

I don't go along with the old saying, "Breed the best to the best and hope for the best", that is buying an animal, not breeding to me!!!

I have a simple theory that involves a budget, type, making sure the sire can leave fillies (and you would be happy if you get one), depth in the dams pedigree, depth of the sires maternal line, not being one of hundreds, not being frightened by new sires, and feeding well, using my own stock skills gained from 4 generations and over 100 years on this wonderful stock country at "Phoebe" 10 kms north west of Cheviot, North Canterbury.
